Allow Your Demands to Be Met with Gardening Supplies.

It's difficult to do much gardening without gardening supplies. Supply and demand, while commonly taking economic connotations, can be applied quite easily to the world of gardening. People who are serious about their gardens quite simply demand that they use the best supplies available.

A water garden is a specific niche of the gardening world and therefore requires the proper gardening supplies. The underlayment of a pond or water garden can be cut using scissors or a utility knife. Technically, a pocketknife could be used. However, let's face it, with all the conveniences a pocketknife affords, accuracy in cutting does not top the list. Furthermore, for a water garden or pond, it may beneficial to tape any small pieces of pond underlayment together to keep them from moving when the pond liner is placed. It may be difficult to cut nicely shaped small pieces of pond underlayment with a pocketknife. More accurate gardening supplies will help create a beautiful water garden. Another important gardening supply for the water garden is dechlorinator. This will help remove any chlorine or chloramines. Also, remember to add aquatic plants as soon as possible after the construction of the pond is complete. Packaged bacteria should be used to seed the pond filter and pond. Then, slowly but surely a few fish at a time should added over the course of several weeks to allow the bacteria to establish itself.

When deciding which gardening supplies to purchase, just remember to combine the skills and knowledge of experts with your common sense, gardening desires, and vision. Best of luck!

Looking to Apply Concert Lighting to Outdoor Area
If you’ve ever been to a concert then you have probably been wowed by the amazing display of lighting. The techniques used in musical concert are only used to enhance the mood of the music being played. Whether it’s indoor or outdoor these lighting techniques uses subtleties in order to highlight the band playing without being to overwhelming. Are you looking for something new for you landscaping? Concert lighting outdoors could be the special addition you need. Here are some tips to help you with your concert outdoor lighting. Rule #1 " Back Lights If we compare concert outdoor lighting to real concert lighting, the major difference is that during a real concert, most of the light comes from the front, they use big spotlights and flood lights to illuminate the center of the action. Has for concert outdoor lighting the light should always come from behind what you are trying to illuminate. You see your goal is to establish a relaxing mood and identify what you are trying to light at the same time. You will achieve this by placing the lights behind, creating an interesting play of shadow and light. Rule #2 " Who’s the star? Most of the time musical formations have a leader; this leader is the one we see the most. This rule can also be applied to your concert outdoor lighting; we will need to determine what the masterpiece of your concert outdoor lighting setup is. It could be things like: - Decorative fountain - Your prize Rosebush - Or any other part of your landscape. But choose the one that you like the most. This is where we deviate from the rule #1. This center piece alone is the only one who is allowed to have any light come from the front, this is the only exception. Rule #4 " Colors are important One of the most important factors about your concert outdoor lighting is colors. Most people don’t realize that the color of your lighting plays an important role in the mood you are trying to create. This is easily achievable since today most outdoor lighting fixtures are available with LED displays, which can easily, at very little cost, provide color to your concert outdoor lighting. Rule #5 - Use Variety and Simplicity To create an amazing display of light you will need to use different and complementary colors for your back lights. The same goes for what you will use to illuminate your centerpiece. The goal here is to set the mood without illuminating too much, this is very important. Don’t fall in the trap of illuminating too much, this will create glare and your concert outdoor lighting setup will be too bright to look at in the dark. As I said, use color for your back lights to set a relaxing mood. Make sure you follow These 5 basics rules, doing this will make sure you have an amazing outdoor concert lighting display.

Backyard Neglect, A National Phenomenon " And What To Do About It

-by Elton DeW©se

=============================================

Aah yes, the backyard. So many events, gatherings, memories. Do I hear the theme to the bridal march, birthday party horns, something sizzling on the grill? So much activity went on here over the years remembering them all would prove difficult. But the backyard is much more than all of these things. It can become a ‘sanctuary’ for you and your furry neighbors(of the four -legged persuasion), as well as the feathered ones(two-legged persuasion). A place to relax and get away from it all, hence the word sanctuary in quotes. When last did you take a REALLY GOOD LOOK at your backyard and said to yourself - “Egads!” Just kidding... Maybe not. But seriously, have you ever seen your backyard for what it really is or rather what it could become? I’ll bet you never once cast your wary eyes on this most overlooked and under kept part of your domain and saw the raw potential of all this real estate.

It’s my humble opinion that people, at least in this society " Neglect Their Backyards! There, I said it. I feel better now. It’s what I’ve wanted to say from the very beginning. And this phenomenon seems to transcend all cultural and monetary boundaries, as well as other societal “classes” for lack of a better word here. Rich or poor, young or old, “blue or green”, people who like science fiction and people who don’t(I harbor a special animosity towards the last group). No one seems to be immune. Are we all just a bunch of lazy dumb as@%#? Sorry, I get a little passionate about things " from time to time. But here’s a good example of what I mean. Take the scene from the movie The Godfather II. When papa Corlione is in the garden and about to have a heart attack. Now, take a good look around... I wonder if this garden had anything to do with Mr. Corlione’s demise. It seemed " well, sort of depressing. The type of place you could ‘die’ in. By comparison the house seemed lavish, luxurious. Fit for a king and his queen, very well kept. You can spend just as much time, energy and money designing and decorating this most humble part of your lair as you would any room in the house. Think, interior decorating, but in an exterior and outdoorsy kind of way. There are two basic ways to go about it.

1. Pay someone to do it for you.

2. Do it yourself.

This article will focus on the latter. There’s no right or wrong between the two. Different strokes for different folks. And it doesn’t have to be that time consuming or costly. It all comes down to how much time and money ‘you’ want to put into it. With thousands of items, designs, layouts and tools to choose from to get the ball rolling, you can transform this nether region into the ‘place de r©sistance’ of your r&r dreams without breaking the bank, or your back. A few points to remember in order to make things go smoothly.

1. You should plan to do this with at least one other person. You’ll need an extra pair of eyes and hands to help set things up like line levels, hole diggers(augers), etc. more accurately, as well as lifting heavy items such as bags of dirt or cement, bricks, blocks, lumber, glasses of iced tea and so forth. You can even turn it into a family project. Now the fun potential REALLY goes up a few notches for everyone, including the dog! Especially the dog.

2. Plan ahead. Digital design software allows you to do this in spades(more on these in a minute). Like anything you do planning ahead can make the difference between a garden that looks ‘nice’ or ‘truly inspirational’. Take time to carefully choose your design layout, items, budget and ‘colors’. Remember plants do come in many different colors. My personal favorite, plaid. A little something I put together myself with my ‘Genetic Engineering For Dummies Guide To Gene Splicing’ manual and kit. I tell you it’s amazing what you can purchase on the internet these days. Just kidding! Had you there for a moment didn’t I?

3. Organize your design items carefully into groups to better decide what goes where and what looks good next to what. Trying to undo and reinstall items that were well placed, especially heavy items such as fountains or benches could add significant time, energy and possibly cost to your project. Also, if you’re a ‘newbie’ at this you should start out simple. Just a few design items to get a feel for how things will look in terms of placement and color scheme. You can always add to it later. Just don’t get carried away and wind up with a garden that’s hard to navigate because of too many items strewn all over the place. Few things hurt a garden more than ‘garden clutter’. It ranks right up there with dead plants and too much shade.

There are many tools on the internet too numerous to list here that can literally shave days if not weeks off your project time and save you quite a bit of money in the process. The most efficient time savers are digital design software. They’re extremely sophisticated and won’t cost you a whole lot. The really decent ones cost anywhere from $30 to $100. Best bargains I’ve seen are on eBay and Amazon. The software literally shows you what your grounds will look like when the project is finished. This really helps in 3 major ways.

1. It saves you the cost of hiring a designer or landscape artist.

2. It saves you the time and frustration of learning from trial and error, which can become quite costly.

3. No surprises, which can also be quite costly. By being able to see the finished project right on your monitor you’ll know what works and what doesn’t. The image quality is fantastic. Some have actual photos that are incorporated into the software and others allow you to import your own. This aspect of the project has more potential than any other to be the most fun.

Manipulating background photos, diagrams and entire layouts and seeing them transform and take shape right on your computer screen in 3-D imaging is pretty fascinating stuff. Some of the more sophisticated software are actually easier to use because of all the animation built into them. And as a result will make you feel like a real pro or at least quite pleased with yourself for putting together such a professional looking design. Okay, here endeth’ my plug for digital landscape design software. The goal is to transform this Alice In Wonderland into a... into a... well, into something it never really was before but had the potential to be(whew). ‘Exactly’ what that is, I wouldn’t presume to know ‘exactly’. But speaking in a general sense, if your house is your castle then the space behind your house should be " an ‘oasis’ behind the castle. A private resort of sorts. A place that inspires you to relax and mellow out. This is where personal taste comes in which is why I can’t say exactly what this oasis should look like. But again speaking generally it should definitely inspire. Or else what would be the point.

So, I believe I’ve made MY point. I’ve told you what the problem is and gave you a solution, sort of. My solution may seem a bit vague. It’s lacking details on specific techniques and items to correct this MAJOR societal flaw of ours. To give you all these details would mean another article all together. Check back here periodically, I’ll be putting together a follow up article on design techniques and items you can use to help sculpt your ‘perfect’ backyard garden and help bring your dream to fruition. Here’s a tip. Bird houses, benches and fountains would make excellent items to start with. There are many others of course but I chose these three because in my humble opinion I believe them to be the cornerstones of any well thought out backyard/landscaping design project.

Another thing I would like to mention, so I will. A well kept backyard especially a landscaped one WILL increase the value of your property. The money you put into this project will at least double when added to your total property value, which opens up some pretty nice financial portfolio options you’ll most likely want to bring to the attention of your financial advisor. You’ll have a sense of great satisfaction after completing your garden/landscaping project. The knowledge gained from such a project is invaluable and will come in handy again somewhere up the road. Now if that’s not enough motivation for you then allow me to try the romantic approach with a quote.

“The greatest gift of the garden is the restoration of the five senses.” - And that is all.

NOTE: Summer will be here soon, the time for such a project would not be until then but right away. We only have one more change of season before the big meltdown(and I don’t mean global warming). So get ready and get organized!

Create An Outdoor Oasis In Your Own Backyard With A Ponds
As the weather turns warmer, people are drawn into the backyard. At first it is to clean up after a long winter’s hibernation, preparing the yard for the warmth and joys of summer. Then it is the family barbeques, picnics and various parties that are hosted throughout the summer months. If you are looking for something new to add to your backyard, consider building a backyard pond. With a little planning and preparation, you can create a backyard pond in as little time as one weekend. These simple additions can take your yard from ordinary to extraordinary in no time at all. Backyard Ponds Offer Tranquility, Peacefulness and Beauty The sound of running water is known for its soothing qualities, its ability to refresh and calm the soul. Close your eyes and imagine the sounds of a creek, sitting on the shore with your toes tickling the water as it rushes by; you are surrounded by only the sounds of silence and the water as it flows past. This is an image of tranquility and peacefulness that is stimulated by the familiarly of the sounds of the water. Building a backyard pond in your own backyard can make this type of serenity a part of your everyday life. The Location Of Your Backyard Pond Is An Important One When you plan the location for your backyard pond, be sure that you choose a place that is peaceful and serene. Once you have created your backyard pond and truly experience the peace and serenity that you will discover, you will wonder how you ever lived without it. You Might Not Be The Only One That Enjoys Your New Backyard Pond In addition to the emotional balance that your backyard pond will provide, the wonders of nature will also be yours for the viewing. Backyard ponds are not only an oasis for human but animals enjoy them as well. Do not be surprised if your backyard pond becomes a home for frogs, song birds, turtles and other amphibians. It is also a beautiful addition to stock your pond with a selection of ornamental koi or goldfish. These colorful fish are beautiful to watch and add a sense of movement and vitality to your pond. The brilliantly colored fish in the colors of gold, yellow and white are a breathtaking contrast to the deep greens of the plant life and the dark water of the pond.

Bonsai - Care and Growth
Bonsai are trees and shrubs that are grown uniquely small in containers. Originally it was meant to bring art and nature together and was a religious experience. Bonsai plants are not typically dwarfs but are regular trees and shrubs which are grown small using specific gardening techniques. The following are 6 tips for caring for this wonderful plant.

1. Light

Bonsai need light to grow. The type of plants will help you to decide the amount of light needed. Usually flowering plants require more light than conifers. Check for the lighting needs of your specific bonsai plant. Natural light is generally best, so put your bonsai in a spot that will receive plenty natural light. During the winter months you will want to augment natural light with artificial light. You can install a timer to allow the optimal amount of light on the plants.

2. Humidity

The majority of bonsai plants are tropical or sub-tropical. They are accustomed to a humid atmosphere and have a tendency to grow best with more humidity. In dry conditions the leaves and flowers may shrink. You may also want to spray the leaves with a fine mist to give additional humidity to the plant. Do not spray it in direct sunlight. You can provide humidity to the bonsai by placing the entire plant, including the pot, on a gravel-filled container that you have moistened with water.

3. Temperature

Most bonsai are used to mild temperatures and thrive best in these conditions. Specific species of bonsai plants need different temperature ranges. Research this when choosing your plants. Remember that the temperature will be affected by the quantity of light your bonsai gets.

4. Watering

The amount of water a bonsai needs will differ throughout the year. This is because the bonsai go through periods of growth and non-growth periods. They generally require less water during dormant periods and more water during their growth period. Flowering plants need more water and food just before and during the time it blossoms. Each type of bonsai plant have varying water requirements which you should check when buying your plants.

5. Pruning

Keeping them properly pruned is a big part of the enjoyment of bonsai. Always use sharp pruning shears when making the cuts. Be careful that you do not prune too much. Envision the total shape and look of the bonsai when you begin the pruning process. Thinning is typically done to avoid thick shapes and is usually done on the bottom third of the plant.

6. Repotting

Bonsai need to be repotted frequently. The roots start to become entwined and impacted. When the roots become too dense there generally is not enough soil around the root system to keep it moist. The bonsai will not continue to grow in these conditions. The decision on how often to repot depends entirely on its growth. Some bonsai grow faster than others so when you decide to repot remove the plant and root from the ground. Clip away any of the smaller root system and repot the plant in a larger container.

Greenhouse Hobby
Once you have grasp on the concept of greenhouses and gardening basics, then you can actually start thinking about how to incorporate greenhouses.

The first thing that you are going to want to do is pick out the different plants and flowers that you are interested in planting. Next, you are going to have to go out and purchase the proper seedlings for each of these plants and flowers.

If you are looking for a great hobby that will not only keep you busy but allow you to have fun as well, then you should definitely consider owning a greenhouse. Even if you do not have a yard, you can get started with a greenhouse hobby using a tabletop or mini-greenhouse.

There are many reasons why owning and maintaining a greenhouse as a hobby is so much fun. Perhaps the best reason is that it turns out beautiful results. With a greenhouse you can grow plants and flowers all year round.

How to start your greenhouse hobby

If you are interested in greenhouses, then one of the first things that you are going to have to do is research. Particularly if you are a newcomer to gardening. You should take the time to read up and research about the greenhouse hobby and what it is all about.

The Tabletop Greenhouse

Many people balk at a greenhouse hobby because they do not have a large amount of outdoor space. These days, this is not a problem - if you use a tabletop greenhouse. There are so many great factors to these particular types of greenhouses. First, and obviously, they are much smaller than regular sized greenhouses, and so you can put them in more of a variety of places.

Tabletop greenhouses are also great because they are so easy to maintain once you have plants in them. So you do not have to be a gardening expert in order to take care of them properly and help the plants to strive.

Getting Started with your Greenhouse Hobby

Once you have done that, then you have to place them all into the greenhouse and start your potting. You also have to make absolutely sure that all of the plants get enough water and sunlight. In addition, you will need to monitor the temperature and humidity within the greenhouse to ensure your plants and flowers thrive.

African Violet An Indoor Plant
African violets can bloom any time of the year. They are indoor plants, and as such, are not under the constraints that other plants are to bloom seasonally. Some growers say their violets actually can bloom 12 months of the year; in other words, all the time. I, myself have found that after blooming for six to eight weeks my violets need to take a "rest" period of one to three months.

But, usually my violets are in bloom twice a year, sometimes three, and at six to eight weeks at a time that sums up to about five to six good months of blooms, not too shabby! They are especially lovely when blooming during the cold of winter, when their deep green foliage and bright colorful blooms are in contrast to the white snow or the gray landscape, outside the window. One thing that will contribute to violets' potential to bloom year-round is to fertilize them every time they are watered. That, along with enough sunlight, humidity and warmth is the best recipe for African violets.

It is not uncommon for violets to "sport". In other words, your white violet puts up a purple blossom, or pink blossom or some other color. When the hybridizer created your particular variety, they cross pollinated two violets, more than likely, one of them was purple. So your violet has reverted back to one of its parents. Will it go completely purple? That's a good possibility. Why? Well some are just more "unstable" than others. I would guess the plant you bought was probably an Optimara violet.

Optimara violets are grown by a huge commercial grower in Nashville, Tenn. It was started by the Holtkamp family when they were in Germany. Eventually they came to this country and the family has carried on with violets for years and years. They are the biggest or at least one of the biggest commercial violet hybridizers and growers in the nation.

They produce plants for the home grower that uses window light. Folks like me that have ten lighted plant stands and a big room grow for show, I do grow Optimara violets, some of their plants make great show plants. However, when I do get one, I figure it has at least a 50% chance of sporting to a different color.

That makes it not blooming true so I couldn't show it under the name that was given because the plant would not match the description they gave to the African Violet Society of America to register it. Complicated I know but that's the rules and since I'm also an African Violet judge, I have to know those rules.

When a violet sports to a different color, it doesn't mean you have done anything wrong. Although environment can be a factor, it is more likely that the plant is just not stable. Sometimes you get pretty interesting color combinations from the plant that sports. Sometimes it will change colors and never go back to the original color. In fact, all the plants that I have grown that sported never went back to the original color. You never know what you'll wind up with sometimes.

As for repotting. If it has been over six months since you acquired the plant or since you have repotted, it would be a good idea to repot. But repotting into a pot that is too large will cause the roots to stay too soggy and your plant will not thrive. Violets like "tight feet" and they don't like soggy roots. So overpotting and overwatering is a no,no. The general rule is the pot should be 1/3 the size of the plant. For example: If your plant is 12 inches across from leaf tip to leaf tip, then it should be in a four inch pot. The soil you use is important also.

Most of the soils labled for African Violets is junk! Way too heavy for violets. So I would try to find a very light soil. Sunshine makes a good one, Optimara makes a good one. You can use one labeled for violets but be sure to add at least 50% or more perlite to the mix. That makes it lighter. You can usually find everything you need at Wal-Mart or a good nursery might have what you need. Most good violet soils are 1/3 peat moss, 1/3 perlite and 1/3 vermiculite. But you should be able to find a "ready made" one.

The most important factor in getting African Violets to bloom is light-Insufficient light is probably the most common reason for failure of African violets to flower. They need at least six to eight hours per day in order to flower. South or west windows will give you the best light this time of the year. You can also use artificial lighting.

They do best in daytime temperatures of 70 to 90 and nighttime temps of 65-70. They also like high humidity, which you can offer by placing the pot into a pebble tray-fill a small tray with pebbles and place the pot into this tray. Keep filled with water, this will create humidity around the plant. Never mist an African Violet or any plant with 'hairy' leaves.

Allow the soil to become dry to the touch between waterings. Pour water until it is coming out of the drain holes. Try not to splash water onto the leaves. Add a 20-20-20 fertilizer at least once a month. I believe it is Miracle Grow that makes one just for African Violets.

Air Movement in Grow Room " Some Basic Considerations
Plants grow best in an environment that is well ventilated to effectively dissipate heat. All artificial light sources generate heat and grow rooms have to be therefore, provided with some means of cooling. Cooling of grow rooms is best done using blowers, with one mounted on the inside to blow hot air out, and the other mounted on the outside to blow cool air in. This arrangement works best with the hot air exhaust blower mounted up high inside and the cool air blower mounted low on the outside, as hot air being lighter than the surrounding air tends to rise while cool air tends to settle to the bottom.

Exhaust blowers are sized on the basis of the amount of air they can move. Normally blower capacities are quoted in CFM i.e. Cubic Feet per Minute (CFM) of air, like say “315 CFM” which means that the blower will move 315 cubic feet of air in one minute, provided there are no restrictions on the intake or exhaust. But it is not possible to completely eliminate intake or exhaust restrictions. Some restriction will always be there, in the form of hose resistance. When air flows through a hose, it has to overcome the resistance of the hose which heats up the air, it is advisable therefore to select the hose that offers the least resistance to air movement. Aluminum tubing with its smooth inside wall surface offers low resistance to air flow and it therefore ideally suited for such applications.

Apart from the losses due to hose resistance, there are other factors that need to be considered while sizing blowers to suit the requirements of your hydrohut grow room. The blower size will basically depend on the size of the grow tent and the number of air changes that need to be effected per hour. A 6x6x8 (6 feet wide x 6 feet long x 8 feet ceiling height) grow tent that requires to have its air changed every minute or so will require a blower of capacity around 265 CFM. But exhausting the hot air inside will not by itself ensure adequate cooling. It is also necessary to ensure that the hot air inside is replaced by cold air from outside to effect good cooling. That is the reason why it is important to draw in cool air from outside using another blower.

The number of air changes required per hour depends on factors like plant density inside the grow tent, heat build up and other growth factors. Higher air change rates are best suited to large, mature crops in warm, humid conditions. In most cases, however, plants in grow rooms require only about 20-30 air changes per hour. One complete air change every 4-5 minutes is generally acceptable, but if lighting is creating a lot of extra heat that needs to be removed air changes will need to be more frequent probably every 2 -3 minutes.

Conclusion
Air movement with a correctly sized fan plays an important role in determining the success of any indoor crop. Though it is often overlooked, air movement is essential to maintaining optimal conditions for plant growth. It serves to ensure the correct levels of temperature, humidity and CO2 at the leaf surface which is the critical interface for vital plant processes like photosynthesis and transpiration.
