Vegetable Gardening Gets a Thumbs Up on Nutritional Value!

One commonly planted vegetable in the world of vegetable gardening is the onion. Ah yes, the onion. That tasty vegetable that brings flavor to cheeseburgers, stomachaches to middle-aged men, and tears to those who chop them. In vegetable gardening, onions prefer to be planted on a bed that is mounded or raised up 3 or 4 inches high and about 20 inches wide. Two rows of onions, spaced about 10 inches apart, can be planted down the bed. It is important that the bed receive its full due of sun. Apparently humans aren't the only ones who like catching some rays! Now, the furrow should be about 4 inches deep. In the bottom of the furrow, fertilizer should be scattered. The fertilizer needs to be rich in phosphorous, such as ammonium phosphate. As one might or might not expect with vegetable gardening, the next step is to evenly spread one-half cup of fertilizer for every 10 feet of row. Phosphorous will greatly increase the growth and size of the onions. It is important that you don't add sulfur to the soil! Although other vegetables benefit from the mixing of sulfur into the soil, it will cause sweet onions to turn hot! There's nothing worse than biting into a sweet onion and getting burned.

Many gardeners who indulge in vegetable gardening like to start their plants from seed, because they can grow interesting and unusual varieties that aren't always available in local garden stores.
